Week 1 - Learning Theory

The video of Judy Willis gave me a great insight to how the brain works, and why it's so important to make each individual in the classroom comfortable in their surroundings in order for them to retain the information being taught. It is important for a teacher to know their students, their prior knowledge and interests to be able to personalise the learning experiences in the classroom, creating a sense of comfort for the students. In my future classroom I will keep a small journal with each students name in it and record information about their interests and family life, that way I too will be able to personalise my learning experiences with my students.
A lot of children in Australia are already exposed to technology in their homes. Using ICT in the classroom can benefit the children by seeing relevance in what they are learning as most of them are already familiar with computers, ipads, mobile phones and ipods.

Based on the learning theories I believe each one has its benefits and a place within the classroom. I have only heard about connectivism through this course which is exactly the learning theory that we are all using through this course, by creating our own online support network.

  1. Love your idea about the journal. Maybe an index book (like the ones we used for addresses in the old days LOL) could work well for this. I will be giving this a try too!
Connectivism? Is this course based on it? I kind of see connectivism as starting with no idea but learning where to find the information. This course definitely has a foot in this pond, but do you think its actually swimming in the pool of Social Constructivism??

  2. I think Social Constructivism definitely :) But the fact that all of our learning is online, no textbook is required and in the distant mode. We are connecting with each other through technology and creating our own support network such as yourself. They gave an example on the YouTube clip about collaborating online through blogs and about the 21st Century student. Well that's what I gathered from the clip! Hope your first assessment is coming along nicely, mine still needs some tweaking!
